Looking for R&R?
Once the work is done, escape the city! We recommend Port Stephens for dolphins and dunes, or Huskisson for the whitest sand in the world.
SA β AU: Everything You Need to Know
Practical answers to the questions every South African has about Australia
Money & Payments
No! Unlike South Africa, tipping is not expected or required. Wages are much higher here. If service was exceptional, you can round up or leave 10%, but no one will look at you funny if you don't.
Yes, Visa and Mastercard work everywhere. Tap-to-pay is universal β you'll rarely need to insert or swipe. Just check your bank's international transaction fees. Apple Pay and Google Pay are widely accepted too.
Roughly 2-3x more expensive. A coffee is about A$5 (R55), a pub meal A$25-35 (R275-385), and a nice dinner A$80-120 (R880-1320) per person. Alcohol is especially pricey β expect A$10+ for a beer at a bar.
Not essential. ATMs are everywhere and give good rates. You can also use your card for most transactions. If you want some cash on arrival, the airport has exchange services, though rates aren't the best.
Getting Around
Yes! Your South African licence is valid for up to 3 months. We drive on the LEFT side (same as home), so no adjustment needed there. Speed limits are in km/h and strictly enforced β speed cameras are everywhere.
Both cities have excellent public transport. In Melbourne, get a Myki card for trams, trains, and buses. Sydney uses Opal cards. You can tap credit cards directly on most readers too. Uber and rideshares work exactly like home.
Yes! The 'Free Tram Zone' covers the entire CBD. No Myki needed within this area. Just hop on and off. It's brilliant.
About 880km by road (9 hours driving) or a 1.5 hour flight. There are frequent daily flights between the two. We've sorted a private transfer to the airport and flights for you.
Weather & Packing
It's peak summer! Melbourne: expect 20-35Β°C, occasionally hotter. Sydney: 22-30Β°C. Both can get sudden afternoon storms. The key difference from SA: the UV here is BRUTAL. Sunscreen is not optional.
Light summer clothing, sunglasses, a hat, and high SPF sunscreen (50+). Bring a light jacket for air conditioning (it's aggressive inside). Smart casual for dinners β Australians are pretty relaxed about dress codes.
Yes! Australia uses Type I plugs (3 angled flat pins). Your SA 3-prong plugs won't fit. Get an adapter at the airport or any convenience store. Most hotels can lend you one too.
Culture & Etiquette
A few essentials: 'Arvo' = afternoon, 'Brekkie' = breakfast, 'Servo' = petrol station, 'Bottle-o' = liquor store, 'Maccas' = McDonald's, 'No worries' = you're welcome, 'She'll be right' = it'll be fine. And everything gets shortened.
Very safe. One of the safest countries in the world. You can walk around cities at night without concern. Just use common sense with valuables. The biggest actual dangers are the sun, swimming rips at beaches, and the odd magpie in spring (seriously).
A simple 'G'day' or 'Hey, how ya going?' is standard. No handshakes needed in casual settings. Aussies are famously laid-back and friendly. Don't be surprised if strangers chat to you.
Food & Drink
Absolutely. Tap water is clean and safe everywhere in Australia. No need for bottled water unless you prefer it. Melbourne's tap water is particularly excellent.
Must-tries: a proper flat white coffee, meat pie (from a bakery, not servo), fish and chips by the beach, a pub parmi (chicken parmigiana), Tim Tams, and if you're game β Vegemite on toast. Melbourne's food scene is world-class multicultural.
No! Unlike SA, alcohol is only sold at separate bottle shops ('bottle-o'). Supermarkets don't sell booze. Most bottle shops close by 10pm. Drinking in public spaces is generally illegal, but picnics in parks are usually fine.
Safety & Wildlife
Not in the cities! You won't see snakes or spiders in Melbourne or Sydney CBD. At beaches, swim between the red and yellow flags (lifeguard patrolled areas). Jellyfish can be an issue up north, but not in Sydney or Melbourne.
Take it seriously. Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. The UV index regularly hits 'extreme' levels in summer. Wear SPF 50+, reapply every 2 hours, and wear a hat. You WILL burn faster than you expect.
South Africans don't need any special vaccinations. The only watch-out: Australia has very strict biosecurity β don't bring any food, seeds, or plant material. Declare everything at customs. Fines are steep.
